London Heathrow Airport handled 6.77 million passengers in September, up by +2.9% year-on-year, making it the busiest September ever for the UK hub.

Within emerging markets, passenger volumes were particularly strong to Mexico (+16.5%), China (+11.9%) and to the Middle East (+7.2%) as carriers benefited from the introduction of new A380s.

In the year to date, passenger traffic climbed by +2.3% to 56.9 million.

As the government considers a decision on whether to allow a new runway to proceed at either Heathrow or Gatwick, Heathrow claimed it would assist the development of the northern UK economy by creating more export links to fast-growing markets.

Airports can be stressful places with so much to remember and think about. Make sure you remember, there are restrictions on the amount of liquids you can take in your hand luggage. If possible, pack liquids in your hold baggage (luggage that you check in) or only pack 100ml mini sizes for items in carry on luggage.

Its funny given how hard I try to save money and shop around in the UK when booking a holiday abroad but when I land at my destination, I relax and all good sense goes out the window financially! I generally sort out about £100 worth of currency to ‘get me by’ for when I arrive at the destination and I then default to using a credit or debit card for those restaurant bills or holiday activities. When paying on a card abroad, I am often asked if I want the transaction to be in pounds or the local currency. I must admit I always default to answering ‘pounds’ – ooops. According to the travel advice online that is the wrong choice! As a general rule, never pay in pounds – that means the overseas store/bank is doing the conversion, and rates are awful!
Another ‘clanger’ I drop is that I often default to obtaining the aforementioned currency at the airport (for ease) however whilst it’s the easy option, it’s such a waste. Airport and ferry port rates are usually dismal, as they know they’re the last port of call and you’re a captive customer. This week, The Airports Commission has backed a third Heathrow runway, saying it will add £147bn in economic growth and 70,000 jobs by 2050.

In a nutshell: the Heathrow scheme is predicted to create the most jobs and make the most money for the country.
The government has said that it will give its official response to the Commission in the autumn and it is estimated that, if given the go-ahead, any new runway would take more than a decade to build.
Heathrow welcomed the Commission’s decision saying it would now work with government to “deliver expansion for all of Britain”.

However, there’s a long way to go yet. This latest development is just a recommendation. It’s thought ministers will then need to run their own consultation, just a short one, maybe a few weeks, to hedge against legal challenges.
The plan involves building a new 3,500m runway about two miles north of the two runways Heathrow already has at an estimated cost of £18.6bn.
Heathrow is one of the world’s busiest, handling 70 million passengers in 2012. More than a third transfer to other flights, making it a major hub airport. But it operates at 98% of its capacity – much closer to capacity than other major London airports and rival hubs in Europe.

Did you know that ‘air passenger duty’ was scrapped for children under the age of 12 in May – but it’s not too late for people who have already booked and paid for flights to claim money back.
As of May 1, all flights booked via airlines and comparison websites automatically deduct the duty for children, up to £71 per passenger.
But thousands of families who booked flights before this date are also due a rebate. Parents who paid £13 tax on a flight to Europe, including flights to Turkey and North Africa, and £97 on longer journeys, did not need to pay as long as the flight departs after May 1.
Some airlines, such as British Airways and Aer Lingus, are refunding air taxes automatically, but others require passengers to fill out a form to claim the money. See below for further information & source(s).

Currently Heathrow is a (rather daunting) five-terminal airport but the plan is to eventually evolve into a three-terminal hub – comprising T2, T4 and T5. One by one, airlines have now stopped flying from Heathrow Terminal 1 and transferred to other terminals.
